Why Yoga should be an Olympic Sport

By: Samantha

When we think of the Olympics, we think of the impressive starting shows and amazing athletes that do things that we can only dream of doing.

We think of eight time gold medalist Michael Phelps and his abnormal body made just for swimming. But in the end the one thing that we realize is that we are past our prime, and we are much too old to participate is such an auspicious event. But what if there was a sport in the Olympics that people of all ages could do? What if actually the older people were often better than the younger participants of the activity? You may be thinking that no such sport exists, but, indeed it does. This sport is yoga.

Yoga is a unique sport in the sense that you don’t have to born with genes that favor your ability to compete at a higher level. For example, you would mostly likely need to be born with a special physique if you were a pro wrestler or body builder. You would also need to be very tall to be at a pro level in a sport such as basketball. Another reason that yoga would be very well suited for the Olympics is it is an activity done world wide. Therefore, it would be a sport that people from countries all over the world could relate to in their daily lives. One of the main points of the Olympics is to bring the world together for a few short weeks. In that case, shouldn’t there be a sport that people living in a rich society and  poverty alike could enjoy, one that needs no fancy equipment, just your own body and mind? These are my reasons for saying that yoga should be an Olympic sport.

  1. There are probably many who would agree with you. Especially with how Yoga is viewed here in the West, which is leaps and bounds away from what Yoga actually is or how it’s intended to be lived/practiced. Seems to me that sort of yoga is more like the offspring of gymnastics and yoga postures. Maybe they could call it Yonastics!

    Thank You.

    May All Beings Be Happy.
