The other day while surfing the internet I found a cartoon of a thanksgiving dinner. There was, classically, a thanksgiving table set, gathered around were some pilgrims. One of the pilgrims had a speech bubble that read “We are going to need another table” whilst climbing through the window were people labeled as “Illegal aliens.” This brings me to the topic of immigration. This holiday, while we are supposed to gather together, is for our families to fill out paper work and send their children away to live in our privileged United States of America. Now, if you follow the news then you know about Obama’s recent action regarding immigration. In Thursday’s speech to the nation, he clearly stated “We’re going to offer the following deal: If you’ve with been in America more than five years. If you have children who are American citizens or [legal] residents. If you register, pass a criminal background check and you’re willing to pay your fair share of taxes, you’ll be able to apply to stay in this country temporarily without fear of deportation,” he said. “You can come out of the shadows and get right with the law.” Even though this is a great sentiment, how many people are actually supportive and pleased with this action? There are many people who say that America is only for Americans, and that it should purely stay that way. If you’re one of those people, I strongly urge you to put yourself in another person’s shoes this holiday season. Know that even though you might get 17 presents this year and/or a gigantic feast, others do not. Remember, the pilgrims were immigrants to the New World as well!!
Thanksgiving is for giving thanks. Let’s do so.
